ACC Coaching Carousel: One Coach Down...

How many more to follow? The number is looking to be at least two. Possibly more if you include coaches that could be hired for bigger paychecks. Without question, the biggest storyline in the ACC for the rest of the year (sorry, Clemson).

With UNC Head Coach John Bunting officially coaching out the string, the magnifying glass becomes a microscope on Miami and Larry Coker. Will the Hurricanes just work quietly behind Coker's back in sniffing for the next coach or will they tell him what everyone else knows is going to happen? Everyone knows his tenure at Miami is over. It's just the when, not if.

Chuck Amato was just about off the hot seat and then the Wolfpack lost two very winnable games in a row to put the heat back in place. The next game at Virginia could very well be the make or break game for his tenure. If the Wolfpack loses that game, they will need to win 3 of their last 4 to be bowl eligible. Oh, and the next two games after that are against GT and at Clemson. The only thing that could keep him in place even if NC State finishes with a second consecutive losing season is the money issue. With the change on the basketball side, there is a question of how much money the athletic department can spare for a buyout and another new hire.

Ted Roof at Duke. Does anyone even care? Why even bother?

The stuff about some boosters wanting Bobby Bowden to retire, and fan dissatisfaction with young Jeff Bowden's, um, talent as an offensive coordinator is meaningless. Bowden goes when he feels like it. This sort of thing will just make a daggum guy like Bowden dig in his heels. The season may be over to the fans, but that won't change things.

Jim Grobe has done very well at Wake Forest and all accounts say he's very happy. Still, with what he has accomplished with the Demon Deacons has been tremendous. His stock may never be higher, so there has to be speculation.

Tom O'Brien at BC is receiving coaching carousel speculation, even from within the ACC. Whether it is simply idle mid-week chatter or something more is not clear. But his name is popping up.

Ralph Friegden at Maryland appears safe. He was probably safe this year, regardless, but there has been an undercurrent. He's an alum, and has his team at 5-2. It may not be the strongest 5-2, but he needs just one more win to get the Terrapins into a bowl. Still seems strange to type this, but the best chances will come this week against FSU or Miami in two weeks. Both are home games. Otherwise, they would have to win against Wake Forest or on the road against Clemson or BC.

Al Groh is not going anywhere at Virginia. Just follow the numbers.
