Its been nearly 50 years since Auburn won its lone national championship. If they were Alabama, they would have claimed 1983, 1993 and 2004. But because they don't lie to themselves, they'll admit to having just one. If they are to win another one, 2006 is the year.Never has Auburn had a better opportunity to win the national championship than this year. After watching the first month of the college football season, it's apparent that Auburn and LSU are the class of the conference. Once you get past those two teams, the conference is mediocre mainly because of quarterback troubles around the league.
Watching Florida over the weekend, you get the feeling that Urban Meyer's group still hasn't found itself offensively. Rarely has a team won the SEC with two quarterbacks. This Tebow/Leak combo may work against Kentucky and Alabama, but it's going to be an entirely different story with LSU and Auburn.
Georgia finds itself in the same situation. You cannot win the conference with a freshman quarterback. You can barely beat Ole Miss. Tennessee is improved, but still not a contender in the East. They may get by Georgia this Saturday solely because of the Dogs quarterback troubles. But don't count Mark Richt out. He finds ways to win.
As I said earlier this week, South Carolina is getting better. Don't be surprised to see them go to the Swamp and upset Florida. Is it time to reserve the fireurbanmeyernow.com website? Let the ole ball coach win in Gainsville and you're going to see fireworks. That would be two in a row.
So where does that leave Auburn? The Tigers schedule is perfect. Arkansas will give Auburn a test on Saturday. They have had a week off to prepare. The Tigers defense will see some new wrinkles. But again, it's very unlikely that a freshman quarterback comes into Jordan-Hare and gets a win.
With Florida facing LSU this weekend, you can expect a physical game. Auburn still hasn't recovered from it. It's going to be very difficult for the Gators to follow up two physical games in a row, then come to Pat Dye Field and beat Auburn.
If Auburn is 7-0 two weeks from today, call your bookie and put some hard money on Auburn being in Arizona in January. This team is more than capable of beating either Florida or Georgia more than once.

That's funny Fred!! If Auburn EVER had any friends in Birmingham(I doubt it), I've never seen them (by the way....big BAMA town) and if AU has ANY leeway with any officials, it will be the first year, cause we have had year after year of calls going against us in crucial games. I suggest you and other LSU fans give it up and move on(or actually read the NCAA rule book, because the call was correct). Jeez!!!

Yep, it's Auburn's year......either the school or the alumni association has the SEC officials in their hip pocket and that includes Redding, the head of that same group.Cant really blame them since they are headquartered in Birmingham , which is loaded with wealthy Auburn grads. Too bad college officials officiate because Pop Warner is probably more honest.

I find it a little disingenuous for you to suggest that Auburn wouldn't/didn't claim 2003 as a National Championship. Tuberville handed out National Championship rings and the university commissioned & sold "People's Champions" logo items at auburn.edu.

My late husband, Billy Burbank, had lettered at Auburn in the early 50's in football and baseball.(Look it up in the archives!) He will be gone for 5 years in December, and wherever his sould may be resting, I know that he'd enjoy an Auburn National Championship.

Fred, If you're a Gator fan, why are you so worried about a call in the AU/LSU game? You'll have your chance this Saturday and a week from Saturday. If the PI call stands it's 1 and 10 at the 16. LSU didn't get in the endzone all day. What makes you think they would have scored then. (My bad, I'm sure you have them down kicking 2 FG's to win 9-7) The ifs and buts game can be played both ways. LOL There were 12 different calls in that game that could have changed the final outcome one way or the other. Your statement about the officials being in Auburn's pocket is wrong and childish. It was a great college football game between 2 evenly matched teams. As far as OSU is concerned, Auburn or LSU would have their hands full. One thing I can assure you, OSU does not want to play 4 conference road games in the SEC.

Fred, calling me a redneck won't make your horses_ _ _) true. I assumed you were a "corn dog" cause you were crying and whining like one. So you're a gator fan..."who cares", we will take care of your "urbanized" bunch soon, and we'll see what you are crying about then.... I'm sure there will be something you will find to explain the loss to AU, or maybe it will be a bad call in the Ole Miss game, or the Tulane game, or the Ga. game that makes you whine(equal opportunity crying???) Either way, I know some Gator fans, but you are the first a_ _ hole I've encountered. Now go cry about that and watch AU whip your overrated gators on national TV!!!WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

I'm so tired of this BAD CALL for LSU crap. I went back and wacthend that game and there were more than one questionable call and no calls. LSU had 60 mins. to win that game not one play. With 1:38 left in the third quarter Auburn's Courtney Taylor was pushed in the chest out from under a pass, at the 2 yardline. It would have most likely been touchdown. Interfence wasn't called. You can't pick and choose you complaints!

Hey you guys. Maybe you did not see the same identical call in the Saints - Falcon game. Exactly, like Aubuurn/LSU. The call was identical and no interference was called even though the Zebra's threw a flag. It was called off. Look to the future and forget about history.

just a thought. AU's defense is good but great teams are good on both sides of the ball. does auburn have enough talent,LEADERSHIP,speed,etc.. to stay with Ohio State? i mean come on, ohio state is the clear number one and i don't think that there is any other team out there that can beat them. their defense was supposed to be terrible. they shut down Texas' and Iowa's offenses. i am not an ohio state fan i'm just saying what i have seen so far.

Kevin, I have to say I agree with you. I think AU may marginally be the best in the SEC(altough I would not want to play LSU best 3 of 5). Our offense has yet to really find its "pace", although Tuberville teams seem to peak later(new coordinators every year don't help either). Defensively, LSU shows you what we are capable of. We seem to be waffling between "smash mouth" and "Gulf Coast", and I'm not sure if this is Borges, or Tubs, or both. I do know we can throw more and open up Borges' massive playbook, although we haven't yet. Coach Tubs says "We just haven't had to do that yet" and I have to believe him. The word I get is we are STILL banged up(psyhically and mentally) from LSU, and it's showing. Cox has played hurt last 2 games, and it's showing in his mobility(what little he has) and throws. We just got banged up, no excuses here, but it's the truth. I love the fact that Florida has to play LSU this Sat. If it is half the "war" our game was, the Gators should be as banged up as we were for Buffalo. That is even better than home field advantage against a fast team like Fla.Right now, I don't think we are in any shape to give OSU a game( not that it would be runaway in ANY event), but hopefully by the SEC Championship game, we will be "hitting on all 8
Cylinders" like we have under Coach Tubs every year. Then we'll see, or we won't.... Either way....
WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
